My education and background
I started lessons at the age of 8, and was fortunate to work with exceptional teachers in the classical tradition, playing Debussy, Ravel, Chopin, Mozart, Bartok, Bach and others.
As a young adult, I discovered jazz, and again found phenomenal teachers, including Tom Lawton, Al Stauffer, Gerald Price, Joanne Brackeen, and Sy Platt. It wasn't long before I was playing local clubs with some extraordinary horn players, bassists and drummers between Philadelphia and New York.
A calling to teach
One day, I ran into an old neighbor while I was playing a gig. "Do you remember that my mom gave you your first piano?" he asked. And then said, "I want you to teach my kids." How could I refuse?
I loved it...more than I ever would have imagined. They did too. Within a few months their friends were lining up for lessons too, and within a year, I had a full teaching schedule.
In the decades since, I have taught literally hundreds of children and adults to read music and play piano. Many have gone on to professional careers in music; many use their talents and abilities for their own pleasure and relaxation.
